Key Dates
Sunstar commenced operations in 1941 as a manufacturer and marketer of rubber adhesives for bicycles. Soon thereafter, Sunstar expanded its operations to include the manufacture and marketing of a wide-range of oral-care, hair-care and skin-care products.
In 1988 Sunstar acquired John O. Butler, a company founded in 1923 by Dr. John O. Butler, a leading U.S. periodontist. John O. Butler Company was founded on the principle of creating clinically designed and supported products to address periodontal disease and overall dental health conditions. Since 1986, Sunstar has been in the forefront of dental research and communication initiatives. Sunstar continues to focus on the investigation of the potential links between severe gum disease and illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and other systemic conditions.
Today, the Sunstar group sells its products to over 88 countries worldwide. Sunstar is presently the world’s seventh largest oral-care company (by market share), and has consistently been the world’s number one market leader (by market share) in the disc brake and sprocket industries. Sunstar currently employs 3,755 employees worldwide.
Mr. Hiroo Kaneda, CEO of the Sunstar Group, as part of his strategy to increase Sunstar’s global market share, created Sunstar Suisse SA in 2002. Sunstar Suisse SA currently serves as Sunstar’s Europe, Middle East and Africa Oral-Care headquarters. In 2004, Mr. Kaneda’s vision of Switzerland as the location for the future holding company of the Sunstar Group led to the creation of Sunstar SA.
