Bleeding or sore gums are a sign of infection and the condition is sometimes referred to as gingivitis. This has been brought about because it is hard to remove all of the sticky white deposits known as plaque bacteria, particularly from difficult to reach areas of the mouth; around the back molars and in between the teeth. As a result this plaque bacteria builds up on the teeth and gums, which can lead to localised gum disease – the first sign of which is bleeding.
When our gums bleed it means our bodies are fighting the effects of excess bacteria which initially irritates and ultimately penetrates the gums products. You should never ignore bleeding in your mouth as it will usually be a symptom of gum disease. Once this disease is established, it needs to be treated by a professional. It is then essential to maintain a good cleaning routine at home, supported by maintenance by a professional. The disease can only be stabilised and will return if good oral hygiene is not maintained.
