There are a number of reasons why someone may develop a dry mouth, the most common of which are prescribed medicines, radiation therapy for conditions of the mouth and neck and a medical condition called Xerostomia. Many people suck sweets or chew gum to stimulate saliva flow. This, and a lack of saliva in the mouth, makes people with dry mouths much more susceptible to oral health problems and ultimately gum disease.
People with dry mouth conditions are more prone to tooth decay. Whether this is a temporary or permanent situation, a higher fluoride toothpaste should be used. It is sensible to have the condition assessed by a dental professional. Make sure the sweets and gum you use are sugar free. Always carry water with you and have some at your bedside during the night.
